Fergus Shaw completed a BA of History and Philosophy in 2021 and an MA in History (specialising in European, Soviet and post-Soviet history) at the University of Canterbury in 2023.‌

His postgraduate studies have covered topics such as issues in New Zealand historiography, and research methods including Tikanga Māori practices. ‌

With an interest in local history, Fergus has previously volunteered as a historical researcher for the Rural History Society at Ferrymead Heritage Park, assisting with the documentation of artefacts.
